What hard water actually is

Hard water contains higher levels of dissolved minerals, mainly calcium and magnesium. In much of North Macedonia, groundwater and municipal supply run moderately to significantly hard — which is why you'll notice white limescale build-up around taps, showerheads and kettles faster here than in some other regions.

The cost hiding in your pipes

Limescale doesn't stay in the kettle. Over months and years it builds up inside pipework, boilers and water heaters, narrowing the internal diameter and forcing pumps and heating elements to work harder. A boiler with a scaled heating element can use noticeably more energy to heat the same amount of water — and scale build-up is one of the most common reasons a water heater fails years before it should.

Where it shows up first

Washing machines and dishwashers are usually the first casualties, with reduced efficiency and shorter appliance life. Bathroom fittings develop the familiar white crust. Shower pressure drops gradually as scale narrows internal fittings. None of it happens overnight, which is exactly why it's easy to ignore until a replacement bill arrives.

What filtration actually fixes

A properly sized water filtration or softening system removes or neutralises the minerals before they reach your pipes and appliances. The result is longer-lasting water heaters and washing machines, less soap and detergent needed for the same clean, and noticeably softer skin and hair for the household — a side benefit most people notice within the first week.
